01 Overview
PlainClause ("we," "us," or "our") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we handle information when you use our AI-powered legal document assistant at clearclauses.com and any related services (collectively, the "Service").
PlainClause is a stateless, server-side proxy service. This means we do not maintain user accounts, do not store your documents, and do not retain the content of your interactions after they are processed. We act as a conduit between your browser and the Anthropic API.
By using PlainClause, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this policy.
02 What Data We Collect
We collect only the minimum data necessary to operate and improve the Service:
| Data Type | Collected? | Purpose | Retention |
|---|---|---|---|
| Contract / document text you submit | No (not by us) | Passed to Anthropic API only | Not retained by PlainClause |
| AI-generated responses | No | Delivered to your browser only | Not retained by PlainClause |
| IP address (server logs) | Temporarily | Security, abuse prevention | Up to 30 days, then deleted |
| HTTP request metadata | Temporarily | Error monitoring, performance | Up to 30 days, then deleted |
| localStorage acceptance flag | In your browser | Remember terms acceptance | Stored locally; never sent to us |
Standard server logs generated by our hosting provider (Netlify) may capture metadata such as your IP address, browser type, operating system, referring URL, and the time and date of your request. This is standard practice for any web server and is used solely for operational and security purposes.
03 What We Do Not Collect or Store
PlainClause does not:
- Create or maintain user accounts
- Store the documents, contracts, or text you submit for analysis
- Retain AI-generated summaries, risk analyses, or chat responses after they are delivered
- Sell, rent, or trade your data to third parties
- Use your submitted content to train AI models
- Set persistent tracking cookies or build user profiles
- Share your data with advertisers
- Collect payment information (the Service is currently free)
04 How the Anthropic API Processes Your Text
PlainClause uses the Anthropic API (provided by Anthropic PBC) to power all AI features. When you submit a document for analysis or ask a legal question, your text is transmitted from our server to Anthropic's API servers for processing. The AI response is then streamed back to your browser.
Key facts about Anthropic's data handling:
- Anthropic may log API requests for safety monitoring and compliance purposes
- By default, Anthropic does not use API inputs to train its models (see Anthropic's API usage policies for details)
- Anthropic's handling of your data is governed by Anthropic's Privacy Policy
- PlainClause does not control Anthropic's data practices and encourages you to review their policies
PlainClause does not receive or retain any data that Anthropic may collect. Our server function acts only as an authenticated proxy — it forwards your request and streams the response back to you without logging the content.
05 Local Storage & Browser Data
PlainClause uses your browser's localStorage to store a single flag (clearclauses_accepted_v1) that records whether you have accepted our Terms of Service. This data:
- Is stored entirely within your browser on your device
- Is never transmitted to our servers
- Contains no personal information — only a boolean acceptance value
- Can be cleared at any time by clearing your browser's site data
The Legal Q&A chat feature maintains a conversation history in your browser's memory (JavaScript variables) for the duration of your session only. This history is permanently discarded when you close or refresh the page and is never sent to or stored by PlainClause's servers.
07 Your Responsibilities
You are solely responsible for the content you submit to PlainClause. By using the Service, you represent and warrant that:
- You have the right to submit the documents and text you provide
- Your submissions do not violate the privacy or confidentiality rights of any third party
- You will not submit documents subject to attorney-client privilege, government classified material, or other legally protected confidential information
- You will not submit documents containing sensitive personal data (such as Social Security numbers, financial account numbers, or medical records) of other individuals without their explicit consent
- You understand that text you submit may be processed by Anthropic's API infrastructure
PlainClause is not responsible for any consequences resulting from your decision to submit particular content through the Service.
08 Children's Privacy
PlainClause is not directed to children under the age of 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has submitted personal information through our Service, please contact us at privacy@clearclauses.com and we will take appropriate steps to address the issue.
If you are under 18, you should use PlainClause only with the involvement and consent of a parent or guardian.
09 Your Privacy Rights
Because PlainClause does not store your personal data or document submissions, most traditional data subject rights (access, deletion, portability) are satisfied by default — there is simply no data about you for us to access, correct, or delete.
To the extent any personal data is held in server logs (such as IP addresses), you may request its deletion by contacting us at privacy@clearclauses.com. We will respond within 30 days.
California residents may have additional rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA). EEA/UK residents may have rights under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Given our minimal data collection, most of these rights are moot in the context of PlainClause. If you have specific questions, please contact us.
10 Security
We take reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect the limited data we handle. These include:
- All data transmitted between your browser and our servers is encrypted via HTTPS/TLS
- Our Anthropic API key is stored as a server-side environment variable and is never exposed to the browser
- We use Netlify's serverless infrastructure, which provides built-in DDoS protection and access controls
No method of transmission over the internet is 100% secure. While we strive to use commercially acceptable means to protect your data, we cannot guarantee absolute security. In the unlikely event of a security incident affecting your data, we will notify affected users as required by applicable law.
11 Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices or applicable law. When we make changes, we will update the "Last Updated" date at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this policy periodically.
Continued use of PlainClause after any changes to this Privacy Policy constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.
